This year, the law office of R. Brent Hankins P.C., is supporting LEAP and Operation Breakthrough. LEAP or Lawyers Encouraging Academic Performance is a nonprofit that was founded in 1994. Their mission is to promote and expand existing and current community service of lawyers in the Kansas City area. They focus on initiatives encouraging children and young people in their pursuit of an education. LEAP has been honored by the American Bar Association and the Missouri Bar Association. Operation Breakthrough was established in 1971, and the mission is to help children who are living in poverty develop the skills and gain support to reach their fullest potential. The center strives to support and empower children and their families through advocacy, referral services and if needed, emergency aid. Through donations, Operation Breakthrough has been able to utilize funding for a computer lab, school counselors, and before and after school programs.
LEAP has been positively impacted by the Lawyers of the Kansas City area to volunteer as mentors or study buddies. LEAP study buddies read one on one with children, help with homework, and give their time, attention, and support to those who need it.
